Post-Doctoral Opportunities

The Information School is keen to attract outstanding early career researchers through post-doctoral fellowships and grants. With its reputation for research excellence in the social sciences, and its renowned early career development opportunities, The University of Sheffield can offer an excellent environment for you to establish a research career.

The University runs internal competitions for most major postdoctoral schemes in order to select the strongest possible applicants. Details of the specific process for each scheme will be made available as soon as possible on these pages.

ESRC Future Research Leaders Scheme (FRLs) 2012-13

ESRC Future Research Leaders funds the 4* researchers of the future to undertake to carry out excellent research projects and to develop all aspects of their research and knowledge exchange skills. Although the call for 2012-13 has not yet been announced, we are keen to talk to potential applicants from anywhere in the world who are within 4 years of submitting their doctoral thesis. Details of key dates and deadlines will be posted here shortly.

ERC Starting Grants 2013

ERC Starting Grants are aimed at researchers of any nationality with 2-7 years of experience since completion of PhD (or equivalent degree) and scientific track record showing great promise. They aim to support up-and-coming research leaders who are about to establish a proper research team and to start conducting independent research in Europe. The scheme targets promising researchers who have the proven potential of becoming independent research leaders. It will support the creation of excellent new research teams. Any prospective applicants should contact us as soon as possible to discuss an application, and note that an internal university deadline of 10 September 2012 is in place for draft applications.

Leverhulme Early Career Fellowship Competition (ECFs) 2013

Leverhulme Trust Early Career Fellowships (ECFs) aim to provide career development opportunities for those who are at a relatively early stage of their academic careers (within 5 years of PhD, and not yet holding full academic post) but with a proven record of research. To this end, the Leverhulme Trust contributes 50% of each Fellow's total salary costs up to a maximum of £23,000 per annum and the balance is to be paid by the host institution. The awards are tenable for three years on a full-time basis. The deadline for applications is likely to be in early March 2013.
