The Information School offers three undergraduate degrees in informatics - the science of information in a digital world.

Informatics is one of the world's newest areas of study, and certainly the fastest-moving. Join us and you'll enter a field where new developments are occurring and findings are being made practically every day. And you can play a part in shaping the digital future of the planet.

No other field of study will take you to the very forefront of new advances in the way human beings manage and use information. And no other UK department in information science enjoys our dazzling reputation for research. Study with us and discover the challenges and opportunities of digital information for yourself – from web publishing and 3G to Google search rankings and the social media revolution.

What is informatics?

A better society, a brilliant career

At the University of Sheffield we strive for academic excellence that has meaning and impact in the world. And in the Information School we know that helping people to use and understand information better means creating a more equal and open global society. While you work towards one of our degrees you could be exploring business information systems or open source software, probing internet censorship or improving public services by developing more efficient and ingenious ways of managing and using information and data.

And what about your own future? Our courses are designed to draw on a wide range of disciplines in addition to information science, such as management, psychology, economics, computing and sociology. As a learner you'll develop a broad-based perspective combining insights from both science and social science. By the time you graduate you'll have nurtured many invaluable transferable skills which can help you reach the top – whatever career you choose.

Great support and facilities

The Information School at Sheffield is the best in the business. But we're also a friendly community of learning where you'll find help any time you need it. You'll be assigned a personal tutor to support you right through your course.

The same goes for our IT support experts, who are there to assist and advise as you use our computer facilities and the Sheffield iLab. Scheduled to open in the 2012-13 academic year, this superb new facility is purpose-built for cutting-edge informatics research.

We'll encourage you to share your work by publishing in journals or presenting at conferences, even while you're still an undergraduate. You'll be more than welcome to take part in our fascinating programme of research seminars. And you'll get a chance to run student-led activities within the iSchool, like our student society.
