Who should take this course?
The MA in Global Journalism offers a mix of academic and practical study that will enable students to gain theoretical insight and some hands-on experience of global journalism. The MA explores a range of issues related to the media and its relationship with political and public institutions within regional, national and international contexts.
Students on the course will engage in debates about issues, mechanisms and processes of journalism in a comparative global context, as well as getting some hands-on practical experience of communicating news in the contemporary global environment.
The department has links to media organisations such as the BBC, Sky News and The Guardian newspaper, as well as political institutions such as the UK Parliament and the European Commission Regional offices.
If English isn't your first language you'll need an IELTS score of at least 7.0 overall, with at least 6.5 in writing and no other element lower than 6.0.
Course outline
The course is built around a number of complementary strands:
- Specific academic modules which introduce students to key debates and issues in the field of global journalism and relevant critical perspectives
- Subject specific research training
- An introduction to practical journalistic skills
- Specialist study in a range of areas allied with global journalism, including: media ethics and regulation; censorship and the media; journalism, globalisation and development; online journalism and media audiences.
- Specific focus will fall on journalism in the EU and its neighbouring states, China and Japan, and the developing world
- The MA culminates in a dissertation project on a topic of individual choice
Aims and outcomes
The twin aims of the MA are to engage students in advanced level debates about global journalism, and to provide students with an introduction to practical elements of communicating with and writing for the media.
The MA in Global Journalism will equip you with:
- a solid grounding in methods and processes of research into global journalism
- in-depth knowledge of key issues and debates in contemporary global journalism
- a basic knowledge of a range of practical skills involved in writing for and communicating with the media
- an advanced understanding of debates at the forefront of global journalism issues
- an in-depth understanding of media, state and society in different regions of the world
- a wide range of transferable skills
