MA Magazine Journalism

Our Magazine Journalism masters course will teach you to write, edit and design your own magazines and to develop the skills to thrive in the burgeoning world of online magazines.
Magazine journalism is an intensely competitive industry. We will give you the edge you will need to succeed.
Our MA magazine course has been tailored to meet the training needs identified by the Periodicals Training Council.
What does the course involve?
The course has a heavy emphasis on writing and you will produce material for all types of magazines:
- online magazines
- business to business magazines
- specialist magazines
- consumer magazines
The course also covers all the journalism basics:
- news writing
- reporting and interviewing
- media law
- public administration
- shorthand
We also cover media issues and want our journalists to consider the journalism that is already out there – and work out ways to do it better.
What do you need to get on the course?
A passion for magazines is essential. You should also have a good knowledge of current affairs and be reading the Media Guardian and Independent Media section every Monday.
You will have boundless enthusiasm, a flair for writing and loads of ideas for how to make your favourite magazines – and their online content - even better.
If English isn't your first language you'll need an overall IELTS score of at least 7.5, with at least 7.5 in each element of the test.
What job will I get?
Our students consistently get good jobs. Recent graduates include two of this year´s PPA New Consumer Journalist of the Year nominees, the editor of Staffordshire Life and the features editor of OK! in Dubai.
We also have a strong work placement programme. This year´s magazine MAs have gone to Reveal magazine, BBC Wildlife, Red magazine and Hachette Filippachi´s online team.
We have a dedicated member of staff to help you to get the work placement you want and write your CVs and cover letters.
