Lily Canter

I started a full time PhD in September 2009 in online journalism under the supervision of Herman Wasserman. More specifically I am looking at how the internet has changed the relationship between journalists and their audiences, with a spotlight on UK regional newspapers.
Prior to my studies I worked for seven years in regional journalism, hence my personal interest in the area. I trained at the Wiltshire Gazette & Herald weekly newspaper before moving onto the Northampton Chronicle & Echo daily newspaper. Here I worked my way up the ranks as health reporter, news desk assistant, and finally features editor. I undertook the first round of Johnston Press video training and was involved in the development of the Chron´s newspaper website. I am fascinated by how local newspapers in the UK are facing (or not) the challenges of Web 2.0.
I also run an annual multimedia film festival in Northampton (Film Northants) which brings together the local newspaper, radio, internet and cinema.
I currently teach feature writing, convergence and online journalism at Southampton Solent University and on the side I am a qualified cycling instructor.
I also hold a BA Honours in English Literature (2.1) and a Masters in Print Journalism (distinction) -both from The University of Sheffield.
I live in Northampton with my husband (who runs a cabinet making business) and two cats Spike and Scaramanga.
