Dr. Martin Conboy

Dr Martin Conboy joined the Department in March 2005.
He read French and English at Durham University and received his MA and PhD from the Institute of Education, University of London.
He lectured in the Institute for English and American Studies at the University of Potsdam, Germany for five years before moving back to Britain.
Widely published in refereed journals and edited book collections in the areas of newspaper history and language and popular culture, he has also published five single-authored books: The Press and Popular Culture (2002); Journalism: a critical history (2004); Tabloid Britain: constructing a community
through language (2006); The Language of the News (2007); The Language of Newspapers: socio-historical perspectives (2010).
In addition, he has published a Special Issue of Journalism Studies on Global Popular Journalism (2007) and is the co-editor of a series entitled Journalism Studies: Key Texts.
He is also on the international editorial boards of Journalism Studies; Media History; Journalism: Theory, Practice and Criticism.
Based on his recent publications and related on-going research and publication projects, Martin Conboy is particularly interested in hearing from students wishing to pursue any of the following aspects of journalism studies at MPhil/PhD level:
- History of British Journalism
- Popular/Tabloid Journalism and Popular Culture
- Critical Discourse Analysis of News
- National Identities and the News Media
