John Steel
Dr John Steel is a lecturer in Journalism Studies and course leader of the MA in International Political Communication.
He holds a PhD on the History of Political Thought from the Department of Politics at the University of Sheffield and is a member of the Centre for the Study of Journalism and History.
His research is centred upon an analysis of press freedom from its philosophical foundations to its application in practice.
He is also interested in exploring ideology and discourse, particularly in the nineteenth century press. He has published widely including nine research papers in international refereed journals and five book chapters.
He is currently writing a monograph for Routledge on journalism and freedom of speech with another book to follow on the language of popular journalism in the nineteenth century press.
He is a member of the UK Political Studies Association and a fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
He welcomes applications from research students in the following areas: Censorship and the media; power, ideology and the media; news coverage of war and conflict; political communication, and radical media.
