A significant aspect of the department's research ethos is its research student programme. Students are offered the opportunity to study to MPhil or PhD level on full-time or part-time bases.

- Children's journalism in Libya
- The media and the transition to democracy in Bulgaria
- Convergence of media in a Korean television service
- Political coverage in Saudi media
- Health media campaigns
- Internet journalism and blogging
- Media coverage of corrution
