Carla Montemayor

I am in the third year of my PhD and completing my research on the Internet and political deliberation in the Philippines. The research focuses on the
interface between political blogging and mainstream journalism, with blogs functioning as an extended discursive space for political commentary and debate within a weak democracy. The provisional title of my thesis is Dissent, Dissensus and Democracy: Blogging Politics in the Philippines.

I completed my M.A. in Political Communication (with distinction)at the University of Sheffield in 2005. I have worked as media officer in the Philippine parliament and as communications consultant for
international organisations in Southeast Asia and the UK. My research interests include online public spheres and deliberation, the Internet and diasporic communities, online political campaigning and the
communications strategies of social movements.
