I am the IT Manager for the department of Journalism and look after the technicians and all technical equipment. My main responsibility is managing the provision of technical support within the department, ensuring availability of computers, software and AV equipment.

My speciality area is web production. I teach students the skills they need: from the basic use of a content management system (e.g. Wordpress) through to designing and developing their own websites. I give workshops on multimedia production including picture editing using Photoshop & Apple Preview, video production using Apple’s iMovie and magazine production using Indesign.

Technology in the newsgathering process is changing rapidly and I keep across this to integrate what I learn into the department’s facilities. This includes talking to those at the forefront of technology in the industry and trying out new software and gadgets as often as possible.

Part of my role is to develop e-learning materials for students and advise colleagues in the production of these.

I joined the department in November 2000 after gaining my degree in Creative Music Technology from the University of Sheffield. I’m still a keen musician and enjoy designing sound for short films in my spare time.
