Herman Wasserman joined the department in September 2008 as a senior lecturer. He received a doctorate and MA in literature and a BA (Hons) in journalism from Stellenbosch University, South Africa.
Before coming to Sheffield, he taught at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne and the University of Stellenbosch, South Africa (where he still holds a visiting position as Associate Professor Extraordinary).
He has held a Fulbright fellowship at the School of Journalism, Indiana University, USA, a media ethics fellowship at the University of Missouri, USA and was a visiting resource person at the Council for Social Science Research in Africa's Institute on Media and Governance (Dakar, Senegal).
Before joining the academy he worked as a newspaper journalist in Cape Town and continues to write a regular column for a South African magazine on media-related topics.
His research interests include global journalism ethics, journalism in emergent democracies and media, culture and society in Africa. His books include Media Ethics Beyond Borders (co-edited with Stephen J. Ward), Shifting Selves: Post-apartheid Essays on Mass Media, Culture and Identity (co-edited with Sean Jacobs) and Power, Politics and Identity in South African Media (co-edited with Adrian Hadland, Eric Louw and Simphiwe Sesanti).
He is currently completing a book for Indiana University Press on South African tabloids.
Previously funded research projects include a theoretical exploration of global journalism ethics (Stellenbosch Institute for Advance Studies) and political communication in new democracies (British Academy).
He edits the journal Ecquid Novi: African Journalism Studies (http://ajs.uwpress.org ) and is a member of the editorial boards of Journal of Mass Media Ethics, Global Media Journal, Journal of African Media Studies and Journal of Global Mass Communication.
