David Holmes joined the Department of Journalism Studies in January 2003 from BBC Radio Sheffield.
He read Law at the London School of Economics and then gained a Postgraduate Diploma in Journalism at City University before beginning his journalistic career on the Sheffield Morning Telegraph.
After completing his training, he progressed to municipal correspondent, reporting the affairs of Sheffield City Council when it was led by a young and influential David Blunkett.
He moved to broadcasting in 1986, working as a reporter, producer, news editor and assistant editor at BBC Radio Sheffield. He reported live from the Hillsborough disaster in 1989 and produced a live link-up with BBC Radio Merseyside a few days later. He has also worked as a bi-media editor in BBC radio and television in Leeds, and has been trained in BBC online production skills.
While at the BBC, David was actively involved in the recruitment and development of young journalists, training people in the use of the BBC´s ENPS computer system. He also has experience as an NUJ FoC in both print and broadcasting.
