Katie StewartI joined the department as a lecturer in August 2004 after some stints of teaching Broadcast Journalism at Hallam and Sheffield Universities both at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. I am the leader of all the Broadcast Journalism modules on the undergraduate degree. My own education includes a BA degree in Media and Cultural Studies from Liverpool John Moores and a Postgraduate Diploma in Radio Journalism from Falmouth College of Art and Design. I now also have a Postgraduate Diploma in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education from the University of Sheffield.

I began my journalistic career in radio news, working as a reporter and presenter for Northants Northants 96, Metro FM, BBC Radio Cumbria and BBC Radio Cleveland. I then worked as Deputy News Editor for Century Radio in Newcastle, managing a team of 7 journalists. I co-presented the two-hour drive-time news show “Century 21 News”. My career moved from radio to television in 1995 where I was a reporter and presenter for ITV Yorkshire’s regional news programme, Calendar. I have covered a wide variety of news, sport and features and have regularly fronted live news programmes – both from the studio and out on location. I’ve also acted as a media consultant for Derbyshire Police.

I am the module leader for the following modules:

I teach using a variety of methods, but as much of my teaching is practice-based, I use workshop-style sessions as oppose to lectures where possible. I believe it is in these small group sessions, with constant interaction between the tutor and students, where the most stimulating and meaningful learning can take place. My modules involve 'real life' situations, students are expected to make contact with members of the public from all sorts of walks of life and find stories to report on in various formats.

My research areas include journalism education, and I am due to give a conference presentation on “Incorporating civic engagement into the curriculum”.

I am the department’s Careers officer, and I am always looking for ways of developing our careers events to help give our students the confidence and self-awareness to realise just how highly employable they are when they leave us.

I have also recently been appointed as Admissions Tutor for the Journalism Studies BA.
