Welcome to The Kroto Research Institute
The Kroto Research Institute (KRI) is a major UK research facility, that provides the environment to bring together research at the interfaces between Molecular Science, Engineering Application and Social Impact that improve the world in which we all live in. The three broad interdisciplinary themes within the institute are:
These are
• Biomedical Engineering with Translational Medicine
• Global Soils and Water
• Imaging and Microscopy from Molecules to Manufacturing
Our Research news is regularly featured in University media releases. Current research includes:
- development of gels that identify types of bacteria thereby aiding a speedier diagnosis and treatment
- assisting nerves damaged by traumatic accidents to repair naturally, improving the chances of restoring sensation and movement
- technology to accelerate the development of algal biofuels that would transform the renewable energy market
Our world class Research Theme Leaders carry out multidisciplinary research between the institute teams that is not possible within individual departments and faculties. This unique research environment is created by the co-location of university Research groups who combine their strengths in tackling major interdisciplinary research challenges and form a community where these can flourish. They form important interfaces for research between Engineering and other Faculties, within The University of Sheffield and worldwide.
Research cohesion across the 3 themes is provided by shared Research Facilities that include, world-class imaging and analytical instrumentation in Advanced Electron Microscopy, X-Ray and Vibrational Spectroscopy and Confocal Microscopy.
Structure of the facility
KRI is not a hierarchical organisation.
The Director and Associate Director manage the estate and facilities available to the research groups that reside in KRI to provide an environment where collaborations are formed and novel ideas stimulated.
All academics remain members of their own department, for line management purposes, while based at the Institute. Being resident at KRI provides them with the opportunity to collaborate and use of a range of well equipped laboratories, leading edge equipment and other research facilities in secure accommodation of high quality.
