Welcome to the Department of Landscape

The department is the only landscape school in England with independent departmental status. We offer research and taught courses across the breadth of Landscape Architecture, including design, planning and management.

Top Rated Research

In the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise the Department confirmed its status as the country's premier centre for landscape architecture research. All the Department’s work has been graded ‘international’ in its standard, with three-quarters being rated internationally excellent or outstanding. Previous RAEs have awarded us the coveted Grade 5 rating. We have a buoyant research student community and all staff are highly research active. Our research is intended to be agenda-setting - as well as drawing on ideas and methods from subjects such as geography and ecology, we define new approaches and challenges that help advance the distinctive knowledge base of landscape architecture.

Excellent Teaching

Our most recent Independent Evaluation of Teaching in 2006 was extremely complimentary. The review panel stated "The department has emerged as a leader in its field and has a strong staff team with a breadth of skills, research and teaching specialisms". Most of our courses, at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels are accredited by the Landscape Institute.

Knowledge Exchange

An important part of our activity is 'Knowledge Exchange'. This means using our Know-how to contribute to solutions in the private, public and voluntary sectors, in order to enhance quality of life. We seek to ensure that our academic research and training makes a positive impact on the development of policies, products and services.
