About the Programme
Medicine is a global industry facing issues that transcend national borders. Ideas about healthcare and its regulation are no longer led by the policies of any one country and the EU, together with other European regional organisations, play an increasingly important role in driving the healthcare policies that shape national regulation. The consequence for medical and legal practitioners is that, as well as being informed by traditional principles of medical practice, their work is increasingly influenced by European policy and legal principle emerging from institutions such as the EU, the Council of Europe, and the European Patent Office.
This LLM programme, from the University of Sheffield’s School of Law, aims to equip students from a diverse range of specialities (achieved at Undergraduate level) with a Masters level understanding of European Health Law and Policy. The European focus of the course makes the knowledge gained relevant to a wide geographical employment market and, together with its emphasis upon policy, provides a very contemporary programme. In offering the programme to students from a diverse mix of backgrounds, the learning experience of law and non-law graduates alike will be enhanced. The School of Law has a well-established reputation for research excellence and a unique proficiency in Health Law, which enables us to offer an exciting core to the programme as well as a diverse range of options. Professor Tamara Hervey is an internationally respected leader in European Health Law, and will co-direct the programme with Dr Amanda Warren-Jones. Other teaching contributors are highly esteemed experts in UK and EU medical law, biomedical and pharmaceutical law, competition law, patenting and public law.
