Why choose the MA Law programme?

About the Programme

A career in law is a real possibility for graduates from any discipline and you will find that a high percentage of barristers and solicitors hold an undergraduate degree in a non-law subject. You may have studied Arts or Sciences, or you may have graduated from a university abroad. The University of Sheffield's MA Law degree allows you to convert your knowledge to law so that you can progress to the appropriate vocational stage of legal training once you have successfully completed the programme.

The MA Law programme is attractive to many students because it consists of study over two years instead of only one. You will therefore acquire a depth of legal knowledge over a much wider range of legal subjects. It’s also attractive to international candidates who wish to gain expertise in the legal system of this country, whether or not you have a law degree from another country. The programme provides you with a Qualifying Law Degree in the common law system of England and Wales and a fully recognised postgraduate Masters degree. You must therefore study all the compulsory foundational legal subjects specified by the Solicitors’ Regulation Authority during your two years.

In the second year of the course, there is room for you to choose three options. This is a large Law school by UK standards and there is a wide variety of expertise and legal subjects on offer. You’ll get a further chance to get to grips with what interests you most, because at the end of the second year you produce a dissertation of about 10,000 words on a subject of your choice, supervised by a member of the School of Law who is an expert in that field.

If you're aiming to become a solicitor, we offer the next stage of vocation training right here at this School of Law, the Legal Practice Course (LPC). This is England’s only LPC set within a prestigious research-led university. Graduates of the MA Law are guaranteed a place on our LPC, provided they comply with some basic criteria.
