Medicine: Stephen Wyatt & Will Sapwell

Name: Will Sapwell
Course: Medicine
Hometown: Aylesbury in Buckinghamshire
Favourite thing about Sheffield:
All the great restaurants - I’m a massive foodie!
Favourite thing about the University:
The fact it doesn’t let its historical prestige (which is has every right to be proud of) stop it from being an innovative and modern institution.
Favourite thing about your department:
There are plenty of opportunities to give in depth feedback, and not only is it listened to, you get told what’s been changed!
Why you chose your course:
At Sheffield Medical School, you get two years of pre-clinical, mostly lecture based study. I like this for two reasons:
1) You feel like you’re doing a fairly normal degree and can get involved in what the rest of the university has to offer
2) When you get onto the wards you actually know what people are talking about!
Career Aspirations:
Pretty obvious for us medical students - I’ve had my heart set on being a doctor for ages!
What you hope to achieve as a Student Ambassador for Learning & Teaching:
We’re hoping to run some events and other projects to get all the different departments within the faculty working together - start as you mean to go and all that - with the aim of Sheffield Health Graduates already being aware of the team based, multi-disciplinary, atmosphere of health care.
Interests/Hobbies/Other activities:
I’m quite into my running and go to the gym too. Church stuff takes up a lot of my week and with any spare time I have I like to try out new restaurants and bars - Sheffield is AMAZING for food, especially authentic oriental!
Your top tip for studying:
Chop up your work so that you’re doing little bits often. That way you’ll never get overwhelmed and you’ll be the envy of your course-mates with your annoying lack of anxiety when exam season hits!

Name: Stephen Wyatt
Course: Medicine
Hometown: Grantham
Favourite thing about Sheffield:
With the buzz of all the clubs, bars, shops and pubs in the city to the relaxing tranquillity in the peaks, Sheffield has the perfect blend of city and country life!
Favourite thing about the University:
There are so many clubs and societies within the union and respective courses, there’s something for absolutely anyone- and if you can’t find a society that’s right for you- just make one!!
Favourite thing about your department:
MedSoc have done a fantastic job in terms of helping provide all the medics with a balance of work and play- the socials are awesome, they run countless teaching and revision sessions and they’re great support if anyone needs help or is struggling.
Why you chose your course:
Being a doctor is a fantastic career where the science of the body is combined with the opportunity to interact with and help people on a day to day basis, a very rewarding aspect that very few careers offer in the same way. I’m doing a medical law masters next year as I find the legal and ethical aspect fascinating, hopefully that will make my career options even more interesting!
Career Aspirations:
If everything goes to plan I’d love to go into surgery, not totally sure which specialty. I love the idea of the practical side of medicine and my experience of surgery so far hasn’t changed that. However, doing my LLM next year may allow me to pursue a medico-legal interest either on the side or instead of surgery should I decide to change my mind in the future.
What you hope to achieve as a Student Ambassador for Learning & Teaching:
My main aim is to simply play a part in a team that works to improve the quality of teaching in the faculty so that future students’ learning is as good as possible. Our aim as a team this year will be to improve the integration of the separate schools in the faculty; it will be challenging but I can’t wait to be a part of it.
Interests/Hobbies/Other activities:
I love climbing, football, and running. I also play piano and sing, apart from that you can’t beat just spending time with friends.
Your top tip for studying:
Don’t overdo it- you can only absorb so much in a set space of time- if you feel you’re starting to saturate then have a break and go back to it later. Also remember to get a good night’s sleep, you won’t retain anything if you’re too tired.
