Publishers' alerting services

A number of publishers offer a free alerting service to anyone via their web sites. They will email the Tables of Contents (TOCs) of selected journals, often in advance of publication. Below is a select list of publishers who offer alerting services and brief instructions on how to create alerts for each service.

Please note the services listed below may cover electronic journal titles not currently subscribed to by the Library. For a complete list of the Library's electronic journal subscriptions see Find it @ Sheffield.


American Chemical Society

American Chemical Society provides a ASAP Alerts service and a TOC Alerts service. ASAP Alerts is a daily or weekly email alerts service that will notify you when individual articles are released on the web prior to being assigned to an issue. ACS TOC Alerts is a table of contents alerting service that will notify when a complete issue of a new ACS journal is posted on the web.

To create a ACS ASAP Alert:

  • Click on the Register for ASAP Alerts button on the ACS email alerts page
  • Enter your details in the boxes provided, select the journals you would like included in your ASAP alert and how frequently you would like an alert sent and then click on the Submit form button
  • Enter your details in the boxes provided, select the journals you would like included in your TOC alert and then click on the Submit form button
To create a ACS TOC Alert
  • Click on the Register for TOC Alerts button on the ACS email alerts page
  • Enter your details in the boxes provided, select the journals you would like included in your TOC alert and then click on the Submit form button

Cambridge University Press

Cambridge Journals Online provide a keyword, subject and TOCs alerting service which will email you when new content becomes available. To create a Cambridge Journals Online alert:
  • Click on Register, enter your details in the boxes provided and click on submit
  • Once you have registered click on the Log-in button at the top of the page, enter your username and password and then select Personalize from the drop-down menu
  • Click on Choose journals of interest to create a TOCs email alert or click on Select subjects of interest to create a subject or keyword email alert

Institute of Physics

Institute of physics (IOP) offers an enhanced search alerts service. You can create search alerts, including keyword alerts, from saved searches and set them to run automatically. The results of your search alerts will be sent to you by email at weekly intervals. TOC alerts can also be created for all IOP journal titles. To create an IOP alert:
  • Click on the Create account link at the top of the IOP electronic journals home page, this link is also displayed at the top of each individual IOP journal page
  • Enter your details into the boxes provided and click on the Create account button
  • You will then be able to create a search alert either following searches, from your search history or by clicking on the Alerts button displayed at the top of every IOP journal web page

Oxford University Press

Oxford University Press provides a content alerting service, which will email you the TOCs of OUP titles when they become available. To create an OUP content alert:
  • Enter your email address in the box on the Content Alerting page and then check the boxes next to the journals titles you are interested in
  • Click the Subscribe button to set up the alert

Project Muse Journal Alert Service

This service allows you to receive weekly e-mail notifications of new journal issues or new titles available from Project Muse. To register for this service:
  • Enter your email address in the box provided
  • Click on Make or change selections to start receiving or to change existing alerts.
  • You can also View your existing selections, Update your email address or Stop receiving alerts by clicking on the relevant box.
