Open Access University of Sheffield Procedures

The information on this page applies to peer-reviewed journal articles, reviews, and conference proceedings that acknowledge funding from RCUK (Research Councils UK: AHRC, NERC, BBSRC, ESRC, EPSRC, STFC, and MRC) and The Wellcome Trust only. This does not apply to research funded by any other external funders, and it does not apply to internally funded research.

If at least one of the authors of the article or monograph is a current employee or student of The University of Sheffield, and the results reported in the work have been funded in whole or in part by RCUK or The Wellcome Trust, and an RCUK or Wellcome Trust grant number has been included in the acknowledgements section of the publication, then the information on this page applies to you. If you cannot provide us with a funding code from either of these organisations, we would be happy to give you guidance on following the green route to open access.
If you do not meet these criteria, and/or if you would like to publish your research through Green OA, please contact us.

The University of Sheffield has taken out memberships and secured deals for the payment of article processing charges (APCs) with a number of publishers. If the publisher of your chosen journal is not listed below, please contact the open access team at as soon as your article has been accepted for publication. The list below is not an endorsement of any particular publisher: authors are always free to choose where they would like to publish their work as long as they comply with the RCUK policy, and we welcome suggestions for new memberships.

Each publisher has a different procedure for processing APCs. We have discount or membership schemes with the following publishers:

BioMed Central Royal Society Royal Society of Chemistry Sage Springer Taylor & Francis Wiley

When contacting the publishers above, please supply the fund code of your RCUK grant, and include in all correspondence.

For all other publishers, please contact when you submit your paper for acceptance to check the status of the University Publication Fund and request a claim form for APC payment.

If you have a general query about a journal, the SHERPA FACT (Funders and Authors Compliance Tool) may be of use. Please bear in mind that any specific information provided by the Open Access team supersedes the generic information from SHERPA FACT for University of Sheffield authors.
