As a major contributor to the overall network of information and Library services in the Sheffield area, the University Library welcomes those outside the University who have a genuine need to use materials and services not available in other local libraries. Nationally, we are members of the SCONUL Access scheme and the SCONUL Vacation Access Scheme. Locally we are members of the South Yorkshire Access to Libraries for Learning (SYALL) agreement as well as participating in the Sheffield Information Organisation (SINTO) interlending scheme.

All users of the Library are requested to observe the Library regulations and to be considerate of other Library users. Mobile phones must be switched onto silent before entering the Library; food or drink is allowed only in designated areas inside; and smoking is prohibited in University buildings. For your own security, CCTV cameras are in place throughout the Western Bank Library. Under 16s visiting the building must be accompanied by a responsible adult.

Visitors have the option of applying for an external borrower card (fees may be charged) or an external reader card. Alternatively, if visiting the Library for just a day, a pass can be obtained at the entrance to Western Bank Library, St George’s Library and Health Sciences Library. Membership of the Library is restricted to over 18s. 16-17 year olds can, with parental consent, obtain an external reader card - ask staff for details.

Please note that external customers are not able to use the Information Commons. The full access policy for the Information Commons is available.
