Law Collections
The University Library´s print collections of primary legal materials (law reports and legislation) are located in Western Bank Library. The LAWS, ERC and COE sequences are located on Level 5 in the Reading Room under the mezzanine at the south end. These collections are for reference use only. Self service photocopying facilities are available.
The LAWS collection includes UK legislation, UK and international law reports, and legal research tools such as Halsbury´s Laws and Current Law.
The ERC collection includes legal materials published by the European Union and the European Court of Justice, including the Official Journal of the EU, and the European Court Reports.
The COE collection includes legal materials published by the Council of Europe and the European Court of Human Rights.
Materials in these collections are catalogued on Star, and a finding list showing the location of key titles within the collections is attached to the shelves. The Cardiff Index to Legal Abbreviations (see Quick links) can be used to find the titles of law reports and legal journals that have been abbreviated.
Staff and students of the university have access to the legal databases Lexis and Westlaw. Some legal materials are also freely available on the Internet, particularly from the British & Irish Legal Information Institute, and UK Legislation (see Quick links).
Law books and print copies of legal journals are also located in Western Bank Library, although books recommended for taught modules are in the Information Commons. The location of specific titles can be checked on Star, the Library catalogue.
If you have an enquiry about legal materials, contact Maria Mawson, the Faculty Liaison Librarian and subject specialist for Law.
