Applying for the EngD in Machining Science
- Applications must be submitted using the University online PG applications system.
- Please follow the step by step instructions (given below) carefully to make sure you apply for the EngD in Machining Science.
- Please check that you meet the eligibility criteria for the project before applying.
- Please state which project you are applying for and in your supporting statement explain why you are interested in the project and how you will contribute to it.
How to Apply
- Read the Current EngD Opportunities to identify the project you are interested in applying for.
- Make sure you meet the eligibility criteria outlined below.
- Go to: www.sheffield.ac.uk/postgraduate/research/apply/applying
- Create an account if necessary and log in.
- Complete "Part 1 - Your Details".
- In "Part 2 - Course Applications" > choose "Add New Research Course".
- Under "Qualification applying for?" > select the "Doctoral Training Course".
- Under "Which Doctoral Training Course do you want to apply for?" > select "EngD Machining Science IDC".
- In the Text box enter the title of the project you wish to apply for (from the current opportunities).
- Complete the remaining details on this and subsequent screens, uploading any necessary documents.
- Supervisor details can be left blank; under funding choose "Studentship or scholarship" and "Funding confirmed".
- Please include in your supporting statement why you are interested in the project and how you will contribute to it.
- Check all the details, upload any required documents, and Submit the application.
Eligibility
Applicants should have or expect to obtain a 1st class or a good 2.1 degree in mechanical engineering, physics, applied mathematics or a related discipline (unless specified otherwise on the project description), and should be enthusiastic about research but also have a strong interest in laboratory and hands-on activities.
Please note that projects that are advertised as partially EPSRC funded, are open only to UK and EU applicants who have been resident in the UK for at least 3 years immediately preceding the start of the course they are applying for. More specifically the student must:
- Have settled status in the UK, meaning they have no restrictions on how long they can stay, AND
- Been 'ordinarily resident' in the UK for 3 years prior to the start of the grant. This means they must have been normally residing in the UK (apart from temporary or occasional absences), AND
- Have not been residing in the UK wholly or mainly for the purpose of full-time education (this does not apply to UK or EU nationals).
Candidates must also be able show that their English language proficiency is at a level which allows them to successfully complete the EngD. All applicants require an English language qualification, typically a GCSE or an IELTS test (a score of 7 or above is required, with a minimum of 6 in each component).
