Jocelyn Wong
Jocelyn graduated from The University of Sheffield with a BSc Psychology in 2008
I arrived in Sheffield in my second year and have enjoyed every single moment of this experience. I first heard of the University of Sheffield from one of the lecturers who went to Kuala Lumpur to give a talk. After that, I did a bit of research and contacted the Home Office in Kuala Lumpur.
When given the opportunity to come study in the University of Sheffield, I immediately grabbed it. The prospect of studying in such a prestigious University made me feel very blessed. Besides the University´s ranking, I also took into account other factors like safety and cost of living. Despite being the fourth largest city, Sheffield is also known as the safest city in the UK. It is common to see students walking home in the middle of the night after studying at the Information Commons.
It was hard to leave my family and friends knowing that the next time I´ll see them will be after I graduate. However, excitement quickly took over as I thought about the newfound freedom and independence. I participated in the International Students Orientation and I must say that helped me settle in quickly and I made loads of friends.
I´m very active in the International Student´s Committee. We organize big international events like the Intro Fiesta, Food Festival and Cultural Evening. We also carry out smaller projects throughout the year like the World Week, Sports Day and Film Festivals.
Having lived in Sheffield for nearly two years, I can say it´s a lovely, lovely place. To put it in a nutshell, to me, Sheffield has the exciting appeal of a foreign place that is full of endless new things to learn and discover. Yet, at the same time, I feel comfortably at home because of its warm and friendly atmosphere which makes settling in so much more easier.
