Research Interests
Marta obtained a PhD in Sociology from the University of Dublin on the emergence of modern art collecting in Ireland, with empirical studies on the Hugh Lane Municipal Gallery of Modern Art and the Irish Museum of Modern Art.
Her primary research interest is in the economic foundations of the cultural industries, and she is currently working on three projects:
1-The impact of philanthropy and sponsorship on the cultural sector. Marta is writing a book to be published by Routledge with Victoria Alexander (University of Surrey) on historical and contemporary aspects of philanthropy in the arts in the UK. She is also working on a number of articles on the role of emotions in influencing pro-social behaviour.
2-International art markets: Principal investigator in a British Academy funded project, with Ling-Yun Tang (University of Hong Kong), exploring the impact of organisational business cultures on the sale and marketing of contemporary Chinese art in the London and Hong Kong art markets.
3-Gender, artistic production and entrepreneurship. This is a study of the Sheffield visual arts sector exploring the importance of gender differences on how artists approach their plans and opportunities for career development.
Business Engagement
Marta has developed a series of collaborations with various heritage museums in York in a study of volunteering and its impact on well-being. The principal funder of this project is the Yorkshire Air Museum.
