  1. Does it matter if I’m not studying Accounting or Business Studies A-level?

No, by the end of the first year everyone will have the same knowledge of accounting and management. However, having an A-level in one or both of these subjects may make the first year a little easier.

  2. Is the mathematics difficult?

If you have achieved GCSE Mathematics grade B you will be competent enough to do the Analysis and Decision Making module in the first year of your degree programme. We run two different streams in these modules, so those students without A-level mathematics will soon be at a sufficient level of knowledge to cope with the mathematics element of your chosen degree.

  3. Are there any student societies I can join?

There is a wide range of student societies, and during Intro Week you will be able to learn more about the opportunities available to you. Full details of all societies can be found on the Students’ Union website.

Management School students can join the Management Society, which organises social events for the students and guest speakers relating to business and career related matters.

  4. How easy is it to change my degree programme?

It is only possible to change your degree from one degree to another in the first three weeks of the academic year, and this is not guaranteed. After that, any change of degree will lead to students starting their new degree programme at the start of the next academic year.

  5. Can I take a year out and have a placement year as part of my degree?

Yes, you can take a year out usually between the second and third year by obtaining work experience in an organisation. This can be organised by the University of Sheffield Careers Service as part of the Year in Employment Scheme or you can organise it yourself.

  6. What exemptions can I get from the professional examinations of the various accounting bodies?

The rules regarding exemptions are constantly changing and it is not possible to give a definitive answer as to what specific exemptions will be available when you graduate. Please contact the Management School at accounting@shef.ac.uk for the latest information.

  7. Is there financial help available?

All UK students with household incomes of £25,000 or under will be
considered for a fee waiver.  Please read our Bursaries Information http://www.sheffield.ac.uk/undergraduate/finance/help/bursaries.
