Sheffield Union best in Britain

James Lovegrove (Finance Officer) and Stephen Hubbard (Commercial Manager) bring the Students' Union of the Year Award back home

Club Mirror has awarded the University of Sheffield's students' union its Students' Union of the Year award for 2004.

The Club Mirror Awards are open to clubs; regardless of size, in the entertainment, social, sports and fitness sectors.

The Students' Union of the Year award recognises the Union´s excellence in a wide range of services, delivered by a unique combination of committed staff, students and volunteers. This award recognises the work and enthusiasm put into the building and sustaining a successful operation.

The Club Mirror judges acknowledged Sheffield Union as a UK model of best practice, as students have access to a wide range of activities including nine club nights, a coffee shop, bars, two shops, a cinema, numerous live events from music to poetry, Give It A Go (a programme that many other Unions have now adopted), Sheffield Volunteering (now recognised as a model of good practice by HEFCE), whilst still offering constant welfare, advice, support and representation via the Advice Centre and the Union Officers.

James Lovegrove, Finance Sabbatical Officer at Sheffield Union said, "We´re delighted to win Club Mirror's Students' Union Of The Year award. The award sets a benchmark for future and competitor performance and is an exciting opportunity to raise our local and national profile".

Director of Commercial Services at Sheffield Union, Stephen Hubbard added, "The Students´ Union is a focal point of University life. We´re a Union of over 24,000 students representing a diverse group of individuals from some 120 countries. Our success is a direct result of team effort and enthusiasm at all levels of the organisation. We look forward to celebrating our successes with students and staff alike".
