Editorial style guide

The University of Sheffield style guide outlines the English standard for online and printed materials for the University. This guide is for everyone who writes for printed or electronic brochures, prospectuses, reports and journals for students, businesses, conferences or the media.

The point of using the style guide is to ensure that the University talks to its audiences with clarity and in one voice. It is an initial stage in developing a consistent identity for the University of Sheffield that will help us emphasise qualities that reflect the University, such as quality, commitment to equal opportunities and overall attention to detail.

Before you start writing, please read through the guide to get an overview of the type of style issues you need to look out for. You can then use it as a reference while you are writing. It covers common spelling problems, grammar and usage.

The guide is currently in PDF format and can be downloaded by following the link in the downloads box on this page.

You may disagree with some of the rules in the guide. Where this is the case, please use the University's version to maintain consistency.

If you have any questions about this guide, or suggestions for additions and amendments please email Jamie Coward, Senior Copywriter.
