Marketing Officer

Kate works with Carrie Vernon in the Marketing Planning Team. Her role includes project management of individual campaigns, and interpreting and analysing audience research data.

She first joined the team as a marketing intern where she worked in their Creative Team on projects such as the prospectus.

Kate is currently studying for a Professional Certificate in Marketing and is a member of the Chartered Institute of Marketing.

Robin BylesRobin Byles

Digital Editor

Robin works in the Marketing Communications team and is responsible for the digital side of our projects.

He has worked in the digital sector since 2000, spending the bulk of his career at the BBC working on the editorial side of some of their biggest online magazine brands, including several years at Radio Times.

Robin's work at the University involves responsibility for central areas of the website, including the homepage and online prospectus'. He leads the digital side of other projects and works closely with CiCS to oversee the University's digital brand and offer advice to departments.

He was responsible for setting up the University's central presence on various social networks and is involved with the running of these.

Senior Copywriter

Jamie has more than ten years' experience of writing in different styles for different audiences to achieve specific objectives. He works on most of the University's key marketing publications and advertising campaigns.

Digital Content Editor

Heidi had always thought there was magic in language. But it was a tutor at university who showed her how that magic worked.

Heidi's first love is education, so she's spent a lot of time in the world of educational publishing. Her career started in a small publishing agency near Brick Lane. She ate a lot of smoked salmon bagels in those days.

Heidi's focus at the University is on web communications. She's helping departments update their websites so that potential students know how their experiences here will set them up for an exciting future. She wants to make sure the messages are clear and that all the elements – words, images, layout – bring those messages to life. ete Green

Sophie HolmesSophie Holmes

Senior Marketing Officer (Planning)

Sophie's job is to plan. To plan the resources and timings of the 100 or so projects that come into the Marketing department each year and that's on top of the other day to day work we all do. Once the projects are planned, Sophie project manages a few of them through to completion.

As well as planning, Sophie also keeps her hand in at writing, editing and proofing communications having previously worked as an Editor in the department.

Sophie is also our interface with the Recruitment Support Team who we work closely with. The team supports departments with their recruitment activities and if any of the departments need help with their communications, the Recruitment Support Team liaise with Sophie to arrange this.

One of the biggest projects we work on each year is gathering course and general information to include in the online and print prospectuses. Each prospectus can take up to four months to produce from the initial insight gathering to the writing and photography, from the design process to delivery. Sophie's job is to plan the whole project and make sure it gets delivered to timescales so we don’t miss our important mailing deadlines.

Creative Manager

Sarah manages the Marketing Communications team. Delivering creative across print and digital, the team is made up of writers, editors and a web developer.

The team produce the print and online prospectuses, the University homepage and provides advice on the design and content of department brochures and websites. They work closely with Student Recruitment to deliver recruitment communications. The team also work with a roster of agencies and Print and Design Solutions to maintain the University's visual identity.

Sarah has over eight years experience in higher education marketing. Her main focus has been on producing prospectuses, both online and print and ensuring consistency with corporate identity across all marketing communications.

Before joining the University, Sarah was the Prospectus Manager at Leeds Metropolitan University. Her educational background is in public relations and corporate communications.

Daniel JohnsonDaniel Johnson

Marketing Officer

Dan works closely with departments, providing support and guidance for their marketing activities and projects. He also manages various marketing projects ensuring that they achieve their objectives and are aligned with the University's brand.

Dan joined the University in December 2011, having previously held the position of Marketing Officer for the National Open College Network, a leading credit-based awarding organisation in the UK. He is also a member of the Chartered Institute of Marketing.

Caroline ListerCaroline Lister

Creative Manager

Caroline manages the Marketing Communications in marketing. The team is made up of writers and editors who specialise in print and digital; and a creative web developer who also works in CiCS. The team produce the print and online prospectuses, the University homepage, maintain the central social media accounts and advise on the design and content of department brochures and websites.

Caroline is responsible for the development and consistency of the University's corporate identity. As a team we're all very interested in good web and print design. We work with the University's Print and Design Solutions and a roster of external designers to maintain the University's visual identity across all our marketing communications.

Scott MallinsonScott Mallinson

Creative Web Developer

Scott's role bridges the Corporate Affairs and CiCS departments. His unique position brings Marketing's ideas to fruition by providing the technical expertise to complement the creative skills within the team.

He has worked in the web industry full-time since graduating from university in 2006. Previous clients have included Duncan Bannatyne, GHD, Portakabin and Tesco where he helped develop websites and e-learning delivery systems.

Scott's responsibilities include liaising with external agencies to assist with technical aspects of commissions to ensure their work can be implemented; developing the University's website and microsites; helping departments use the content management system and providing training and support for Google Analytics.

Jayne MaxtedJayne Maxted

Office Manager and Projects Officer

Jayne started at the University in November 2007, having previously worked in the insurance industry.

Her role in the Marketing team is to assist the Head of Brand and Marketing as well as implementing and maintaining processes and procedures to ensure the smooth running of the department. She also takes an active role in the planning and delivery of marketing projects.

Her obsession with numbers from an early age gave her just the grounding she needed to implement and manage the finance process. Jayne loves a good spreadsheet!

She is the glue that holds Marketing team together. If you need to know anything about Finance, HR or Office Management then Jayne is the person to ask. Jayne Maxted

Tom RoperTom Roper

Marketing Intern

Tom is the first point of call for any questions regarding the University's visual identity and manages photography for the Marketing department. He also works closely with the planning team, helping to collect information for the prospectus.

Before joining the University of Sheffield, Tom completed a placement in the communications department of Sheffield Hallam University and has completed work experience for Exposed Magazine. He also currently writes for several music publications.

Dave StanleyDave Stanley

Strategic Marketing Manager

Dave's role is all about helping people to understand that marketing is more than pretty pictures and glossy brochures. It's a way of looking at business problems from a customer's perspective. For us, that means having a clear understanding of audiences and objectives, as well as what differentiates the University and makes it appealing to those audiences.

He aims to help the University achieve its goals by finding ways of enhancing its reputation. To do this, he works with faculties to develop marketing plans in support of the priorities set out in their faculty plans.

Having been at the University since 2003, Dave has managed all manner of marketing projects ranging from a YouTube competition to an online prospectus.

He also provides consultancy to colleagues to help them untangle the best approach to take on their marketing projects.

Dave has worked in education marketing since 1998 and is a member of the Chartered Institute of Marketing.

Carrie VernonCarrie Vernon

Marketing Planning Manager

Carrie's role covers all aspects of marketing planning and project management, as well as audience insight. Working closely with colleagues across the University, her role is to develop marketing plans and deliver campaigns.

Formerly the University's Advertising Manager, Carrie project managed the Dream Bigger Dreams ad campaign and the Real Stories campaign for the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, as well as numerous smaller campaigns including the Management School's Accelerate your career and TILL's I love… campaigns.

If you want to know more about your target audiences Carrie can help you to understand their motivations, identify the most efficient channels to reach them and develop communication messages to use.

Before joining the University Carrie was a media planner and worked on advertising campaigns for brands such as Sony Playstation, Virgin Mobile, Warner Home Video, British Heart Foundation and the BBC.
