CoSHH Advice for Students in the Department of Materials Science & Engineering
It is important that you know the hazards associated with all of the substances you use and the appropriate safety precautions to be taken. By CoSHH regulations (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health [1998]) all bottles and research materials must be labelled.
It is your responsibility to ensure that all the work you do which involves chemicals is covered by a CoSHH assessment.
It is relatively simple to fill in an assessment and/or declaration form for an experiment. You should fill in your own assessment and/or declaration for each procedure you intend using. Up-to-date manufacturers safety data sheets for chemicals are usually available via the suppliers web site.
