Information for MAT Second Year Undergraduates

Frederik ClaeyssensYour second year is a step change in your time at University in that your marks now count towards your final result. You have already started to develop your study skills in the first year and our second year courses will build on the skills and knowledge you have already acquired. You will be expected to undertake more demanding projects and develop a deeper understanding of concepts introduced in year one, while also learning about several new areas within your discipline.

These web pages include information that you will need in the second year of your course. It is important you note that if you fail second year, you will not be permitted to proceed to year 3 in the following academic year and unlike in year one, if you fail year 2, you cannot repeat the whole year. You may, however, repeat the failed modules in the following academic year. Another important point to bear in mind is that all resit and repeated modules are capped at 40, regardless of the actual grade attained.

Please inform your Personal Tutor and complete a Special Circumstances Form, attaching documentary evidence, at the earliest opportunity if there are extenuating circumstances, medical or otherwise, that might have a bearing on your performance during the course of your studies, and particularly during examinations.

Around Easter we will be seeing you to outline the options available to you during years three and four of the course. BEng students may transfer to the MEng course at the end of year 2 provided they attain the required academic standard. Similarly, MEng students must attain that standard in order to remain on the MEng course – those who do not will transfer to the BEng course.

Please remember, that staff are here to help you. If you are experiencing problems with the course, or there are factors affecting your ability to study, you should not hesitate to seek help. [Student Support and Seeking Help]. Your Personal Tutor should be your first point of contact, but if your Tutor is not available, and your problem is urgent, please seek advice at Reception (Room F20).

Events

"Engineering You're Hired"

Engineering: Your're Hired is happening from Monday January 28th 2013
- Friday February 1st 2013
and involves all second year students from across the Faculty of Engineering.

Engineering: You're Hired Handbook

Building on from the "Global Engineering Challenge", in "Engineering You're Hired", groups will be challenged to consider projects suggested by industrial collaborators and industrial people will be around during the week to advise, criticize and ultimately judge student's ideas!

Moving onto Year Three

Towards the end of Semester 2, you will be invited to attend a meeting with your 3rd Year Course Director to discuss and approve any option module choices for the following year.

The Online Module Choice Screen is open from Monday 29 April until Friday 17 May 2013 via the ‘MyServices’ tab in MUSE. Your core modules will be pre-loaded so you only have to add your option choices to a total of 120 credits. Your Department will approve your choices and these will be loaded onto your student record to allow you to register on-line over the summer.
