MS&E Image competition 2012
Thank you to all who entered the first MSE image competition and made it the success it was! Choosing the winning images was difficult as we had some really fantastic submissions, but, in the end there could only be four winners. View all submissions
Category 1 - Metals
Sprawling Lines by Matt Hodges
Micromagnetic simulation of a micron-scale NiFe cuboid illustrating the Landau domain structure as well as the demagnetising field generated by the structure.
Category 2 - Non-Metals (Ceramics, Polymers, Glasses etc)
Liquid crystal carpet by Ruibin Zhang
Optical microscopy image of discotic columnar liquid crystal sandwiched between two glass slides. The sample was slowly cooled from isotropic liquid, and the LC columns are perpendicular to the glass surface and arranged in a hexagonal lattice. The image was filtered by photoshop.
Category 3 - Bio-Materials (Cells, Proteins etc)
Fire flies by Pallavi Deshpande
Cells from the eye grown on a polymer coated with a protein. Cells have been stained with DAPI (blue) which stains the nuclei of the cells, Phalloidin FITC (green) which stains the actin filaments and CellTracker Red which stains the cytoplasm.
Category 4 - Life in the Department
I'm taking the lift by Faye Thompson
