Department Overview
The Department of Materials Science and Engineering is the largest Materials Science centre in the UK. As such the department has a wealth of research expertise across the entire materials field from metallurgy to biomaterials. This range of skills has enabled us to develop many successful working relationships with industry. Industrial involvement is very important to the Department both for our strategic development and for the development of our students. The Department has an Industrial Liaison Committee that meets once a year.
Staff
The Department currently has 40 academic teaching staff. Individuals' research interests are available from the staff pages. In addition to the academic staff the Department currently has around 50 research fellows and research assistants and 10 visiting scientists. The Department also has a wealth of technical expertise employing 25 technicians.
Research
The research within the Department spans the breadth of industrially relevant materials including metals, polymers, composites, ceramics, biomaterials, glasses and coatings. In recent years the Department has also broadened its focus to cover many interdisciplinary topics such as Materials Chemistry, Materials Physics and Applications of Materials in Medicine.
