The Metallurgy of Iron and Steel for non experts
A one week course for those involved in the production, processing, selling and utilisation of steel
7 - 11 January 2013
Course Leader - Dr Plato Kapranos

Course Organisation
The course is organised by the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Sheffield and is run two or three times a year in the department. Since its inception, over 1500 employees of the steel industry have taken the course.
Course content
The course consists of four modules, namely Iron & Steelmaking, Shaping, Microstructure & Steel Quality, and Performance.
Teaching Method
Teaching is by experienced metallurgists from the department and from industry. Formal lectures are extensively supplemented by practical demonstrations (in some of which, course members are involved), by films, by videos and by a visit to a local steelworks. There is also ample opportunity for delegates to interact with the lecturers on an informal basis. A comprehensive book of notes covering the courses content is given to every delegate.
Who should attend the course?
Personnel in both technical and non-technical functions, with a non-metallurgical background, who are involved in companies producing, processing, fabricating, utilising and selling steel. A large number of organisations from both within the UK and from overseas have regularly sent delegates on the course and it is widely agreed that the breadth and scope of material covered during the programme provides an excellent overview of the subject and is a real intellectual challenge.
