MSc(Eng) Nuclear Environmental Science and Technology

Waste Immobilisation is becoming increasingly more important as the world seeks safe solutions for disposal of its toxic and nuclear wastes. This course is aimed at students who wish to further their understanding of the basic underpinning science involved coupled with the socio-economic impact of the waste matrix chosen for each process.
Course topics
The course will provide modules in the following disciplines:
- Scientific Basis for Nuclear Materials Management
- Cement Chemistry, Processing and Durability
- Glass Physics, Chemistry, Processing and Durability
- Physics and Chemistry of Ceramic Processing
Students will also be expected to complete a project in a related area.

The Department is one of the leading UK Departments of Materials Science and Engineering. Our research has strong links to industry and is sponsored by around 120 different industrial companies and government agencies from across the world (receiving an annual income of around £11M in research funding for each of the previous two years). We hold a prestigious place as the only UK University Materials Department to have been selected to be a member of the World Materials Research Institute Forum (WMRIF).
Our excellence in teaching has been recognised nationally. We have been awarded 22 out of a possible 24 in the recent HEFCE teaching quality assessment. Our teaching is research-led and is therefore at the forefront of current knowledge. This makes our Department a stimulating environment in which to study. We are continually developing our lecture courses to offer students the opportunity to learn about the latest developments.
