The destination data for Sheffield maths graduates over the last three years shows many working in graduate positions in a wide range of professional areas.
Finance related careers which benefit from high levels of numerical and analytical skills are a particularly popular choice of many of our maths graduates. Several have been recruited by leading graduate employers such as PricewaterhouseCoopers, KPMG, Deloitte & Touche.
Specialisations include the following:
- chartered accountancy
- management accountancy
- public finance accountancy
- the actuarial profession
- tax
- pensions
- banking
- insurance.
More specific roles within finance have included one graduate working as a derivatives trader in the Netherlands and another working as a foreign exchange consultant.
Careers in information technology are another traditionally popular career choice for some of our graduates, but the recruitment climate in this area has been somewhat tight in recent years. However some of our graduates have secured jobs within IT and are working as computer programmers or analysts with employers as diverse as the BBC and the Ministry of Defence.
Business roles within marketing, market research, advertising and recruitment consultancy have appealed to others.
Statistics has been chosen by some, typically employed by government or educational institutions.
Teaching English as a foreign language in destinations as diverse as Japan and Colombia attracted others.
Further study attracts significant numbers after their first degree with many choosing to train to be teachers, whilst others have taken further study in statistics, operational research, finance and the law. PhD topics have included radars in oceanography, solar physics and medical statistics and genetics.
Other examples of what our graduates are doing include working as a meteorologist, a safety analyst with Air Traffic Control, a tree surgeon and an environmental conservation researcher in Madagascar.

University Careers Service
The University has a large Careers Service with an extensive library, situated very near to the Hicks Building. The Service provides help for students at all stages of their academic studies with their plans for life beyond university. It has a large programme of careers talks and events as well as an on-line vacancy service for graduate job vacancies and work experience opportunities. The Careers Service has a policy of encouraging students of all years, and not just finalists, to make use of the Service and so to prepare themselves for their future.
