Welcome

Welcome to the web pages for the Department of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (MBB) at the University of Sheffield.

We carry out leading edge research in molecular aspects of biology and teach a wide range of courses for undergraduates and postgraduates, with a large MPhil and PhD programme. Together with the Departments of Biomedical Science and Animal and Plant Science, we form a grouping of over 100 academic staff.

Our teaching

We teach undergraduate courses in Biochemistry, Genetics, Microbiology and Molecular Biology, as standard 3-year BSc or 4-year undergraduate Masters courses. We have a new MSc programme in Mechanistic Biology and an extensive PhD programme.

The Department has an excellent reputation for its teaching. In the last Teaching Quality Assessment, we received the maximum score of 24/24 for teaching quality. In the National Student Survey we are regularly first or second for student satisfaction. We were also highly commended in an independent evaluation of our teaching in 2008, and in 2010 were recently ranked as 3rd best in the UK by the Times Good University Guide.

Our research

Our research covers a wide range from photosynthesis and plant biology to structural biology; from bacterial pathogenicity and green technology to mammalian cell biology, ageing and genetic instability.

In the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise we were ranked third in the UK. We publish around 100 research papers a year, in quality journals.
