The University of Sheffield
Department of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology

International Postgraduate Students: MPhil and PhD

Two postgraduate research degree programmes are available in the department.

Master of Philosophy, MPhil:

This research degree programme requires two years of laboratory training and research, and submission of a thesis that will be examined in a similar manner to a PhD thesis. After either one or two years of training it is possible to upgrade your enrolment to PhD with agreement of your supervisor and the departmental postgraduate committee.

Doctor of Philosophy, PhD:

This research degree programme requires three years of laboratory training and research, and submission of a thesis that would normally be longer and in more depth than an MPhil thesis. Most students wishing to undertake PhD training will be enrolled in the MPhil programme and be upgraded to PhD after the first year of satisfactory progress.

Applications and Admissions

Applications from international students are welcomed at any time. Although most PhD and MPhil students begin their studies at the start of the University Academic Year (in late September) postgraduate students may arrive and register at any time. As a prospective postgraduate student, you should identify the research area and supervisor and/or specific project that interests you. There are links below to Research Themes for research degree training, Research areas in the Department and to a Gallery of MBB staff that includes their research interests.

Academic staff are happy to correspond by e-mail with prospective students about potential research projects.
