Living in Sheffield
- Sheffield is the fourth largest city in the UK, one of the most affordable, and one of the safest. It has all the facilities on would expect from a big city. At the same time, it is also very compact, making it easy to get around the city itself. Excellent public transport allows ready access to the surrounding countryside (including the Peak District National Park with its famous walking and climbing), Manchester, Leeds, York and London’s St Pancras for access to Europe via Eurostar.
- The University of Sheffield is one of Britain’s major civic Universities, having about 23,000 students in full-time study, and international students from over 100 countries, creating a rich and diverse student community.
- Sheffield has a legendary nightlife and array of cultural offerings catering to every taste. Nationally recognised clubs such as the Tuesday Club at the University, and an amazing variety of small and large music venues such as The Leadmill and Hallam FM Arena; plus a large array of events and venues at our nationally recognised Students’ Union. Film buffs have access to the university film club, large cinemas, and the exciting independent Showroom Cinema. Theatre goers will be overwhelmed by the offering at the nationally recognised Crucible Theatre, the Crucible Studio and the Lyceum, and the University theatre.
- There are excellent opportunities for sport and leisure. In addition to the University’s own extensive sporting facilities, the city boasts an Olympic size swimming pool, an international athletics stadium, and a 12,000-seat indoor arena, which stages major sporting and cultural events.
Student Housing
Housing for undergraduate students has been through a complete refurbishment over the past four years. It provides contemporary accommodation of the highest standard in a beautiful location only 20 minutes on foot from the Department. It has 24-hour security and an outstanding set of facilities. The residences are grouped together in a campus-like setting in Endcliffe, near to the shopping areas and pubs of Broomhill and Hunter´s Bar. Further details can be found in this link:
University Accomodation Services
In their second, third and fourth years most students live in privately rented houses and flats, although the Endcliffe Village is also available for those who prefer it. Many of these are in the Crookes, Walkley and Hunter´s Bar areas, close to the University. There is also a very extensive range of newly built private rented accommodation in the city centre.
The Students´ Union
The Union is run by students, for students, and contains a very wide range of facilities including shops, eating areas of all kinds, bars, a cinema, 24-hour revision areas, help desks etc. It is a frequent winner of prizes and awards and has recently (2010) been refurbished to a very high standard. It runs a large number of clubs and societies and is nationally recognised for its Volunteering scheme.
