Walking from Railway Station to the Department
Route from Sheffield Railway Station to Department of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (Firth Court), University of Sheffield.
(For this first section follow the “City Centre” map in the University Location Maps)
As you come out of the station main entrance, follow the steel wall of water (keeping it on your right).
Cross the main road (Sheaf Street) at the pedestrian crossing, and go straight ahead up the newly pedestrianised Howard Street.
(Notice the enormous Andrew Motion poem on the right on the wall of the Sheffield Hallam University Building.)
After walking along Howard Street for about 200 yards, bear right in front of the Sheffield Hallam University and Blackwell's, and go up the steps to use the pedestrian crossing across the main road (Arundel Gate).
Bear right up the ramp, and come out onto Surrey Street.
You will have the art deco Central City Library on your right, and will shortly pass the wood and glass Winter Gardens on your left.
(If you have time you may like to pause here and visit the Winter Gardens, the Peace Gardens beyond, and the Millenium Gallery exhibitions.)
You will shortly come to the Victorian Town Hall on your left (with large tower topped with green copper dome and statue of Vulcan).
As you pass the Town Hall, keep going straight and bear left slightly to enter Barker’s Pool, passing the War Memorial, with John Lewis on your left, and the City Hall (a main concert venue) on your right.
Keep going straight onto Division Street, which after a few hundred yards becomes Devonshire Street.
(You now leave the “City Centre” map in the University Location Maps and move onto the “The University of Sheffield” map).
Pass Devonshire Green on your left (either a building site or a revitalised open space depending on when you read this).
At the end of this road you will come to Fitzwilliam Street. Turn right, to come immediately to Glossop Road/West Street (this road has a bit of an identity problem round here, should you need to ask the way).
Turn left onto Glossop Road/West Street , and walk until you come to a major junction with the Hanover Way dual carriageway.
Cross Glossop Road/West Street here, and then cross the dual carriageway and tram tracks by the tram stop.
Walk up Hounsfield Road, which is just to the left of the HSBC bank.
At the top of Hounsfield Road go up the steps, and turn immediately left onto the Union of Students Concourse.
Go under the dual carriageway and up the steps on the left and Firth Court is in front of you.
Go in the main entrance at the front and you will see signs for the Open Day.
