Walking from the Department to Railway Station

Walking Route from the Department of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (Firth Court), University of Sheffield, to Sheffield Railway Station

blank (For this first section follow the “The University of Sheffield” map in the University Location Maps)

Come down the steps out of the main entrance of Firth Court and immediately turn left.

Go down the steps, and go right, under the dual carriageway.

Turn immediately left. Ignore the first set of steps, and then go down the next steps, leaving the Hicks Building on your right and go down Hounsfield Road.

At the bottom of Hounsfield Road bear left and cross the Hanover Way dual carriageway (and tram tracks) at the pedestrian crossing by the tram stop.

Turn right.

After a few yards turn left onto Glossop Road/West Street (this road has a bit of an identity crisis around here should you need to ask your way).

After about 200 yards turn right onto Fitzwilliam street. (It is the sixth road on the right you enter Glossop road, and the bright yellow and green Aslan’s Kebab shop is on the corner).

After a few yards turn left onto Devonshire Street.

Pass Devonshire Green on your right (either a building site or a revitalised open space depending on when you read this).

Keep going straight along Devonshire Street, which after a few hundred yards becomes Division Street.

(You now leave the “The University of Sheffield” map in the University Location Maps and move onto the “City Centre” map).

You will come to Barker’s Pool, passing the War Memorial, with John Lewis on your right, and the City Hall (a main concert venue) on your left.

You will come into a large open space opposite the Victorian Town Hall (with large tower topped with green copper dome and statue of Vulcan).

Go straight ahead (with the Town Hall on your right) onto Surrey Street.

You will pass the wood and glass Winter Gardens on your right and then the art deco Central City Library on your left.

(If you have time you may like to pause here and visit the Winter Gardens, the Peace Gardens beyond, and the Millenium Gallery exhibitions.)

Walk down the ramp at the end of Surrey Street which bears right and takes you to the pedestrian crossing across Arundel Gate.

Go down the steps and across the circular plaza in front of Sheffield Hallam University.

Walk down the newly pedestrianised Howard Street, and the station is straight ahead of you.
