Mark Firth - (25 April 1819 – 28 November 1880) Mark Firth was elected Mayor of Sheffield in 1874. In 1875, he presented a thirty six acre estate to the town of Sheffield as Firth Park. He also built a mansion for himself on the outskirts of Sheffield at Oakbrook, Ranmoor, now part of Notre Dame High School. In 1879, he opened Firth College to teach arts and science subjects, which later became part of the University of Sheffield. Firth lends his name to the Firth Wing of the Northern General Hospital, and Firth Court of the University. |
The Grand Doorway to Firth Court Firth Court stands at the heart of the Sheffield University precinct on Western Bank. The building was opened by King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra in 1905, the same year that Sheffield University was granted its royal charter and officially came into being. |
The 'Quad' situated in the centre in Firth Court. Walking through the main entrance and straight ahead you reach the Quad, which is a grassed area with central fountain that's surrounded on 3 sides by the research laboratory's of MBB. Each July the Dept hosts a large marquee with drinks and lunch for the graduating students and families to enjoy their day. |
