The Department of Mechanical Engineering received an outstanding result in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE).
The Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) independently assessed research carried out by staff in every university department in the country. The quality of our research outputs, the research environment, research income, professional esteem, and PhD students were all rated and compared with our peers.
30% of our research was given the top rating of 'world leading', while 45% was rated as 'internationally excellent'. This places us second in the country for Mechanical Engineering research.
