The University of Sheffield
Department of Mechanical Engineering

Research Centres

The Department currently has a number of research centres/institutes which provide a focus for interdisciplinary activities and basic/applied research. The Department has an active agenda to build on its current activities leading to the establishment of national/international research centres within the University.

The Department of Mechanical Engineering currently includes the following internationally renowned research centres:

Institute for Microstructural and Mechanical Process Engineering (IMMPETUS)

IMMPETUS provides scientific underpinning for the development of physically based models to be used in thermomechanical processing of metals. It aims to integrate metallurgical, mechanical and thermal considerations in developing soundly based models for process planning and control to achieve target microstructures and product properties within increasingly fine tolerances and greater efficiency.
