Profile

In addition to having experience of both manufacturing research applied to aerospace materials and teaching on undergraduate Aerospace Engineering modules, Steve also fulfils the role of admissions tutor to the Aerospace Engineering undergraduate programmes of study.

Area of Research

Steve is working on a range of manufacturing related projects in the area of Product and Process Design, particularly in collaboration with local small-medium enterprises (SMEs). These projects aim to support local SMEs in product and tooling design and development. Example of this include the design and development of a device for measuring the paint thickness of road markings, also the development of a waste compactor for use at civic amenity sites.

A further theme of Steve's research is work into advanced cutting tool technology. This includes the development of computer-based tool testing facilities used for collaborative research with industrial and academic partners. Current research work is being carried out to study multi-scale fracture mechanics in the chip formation mechanism in machining. This supports Steve's research in the application of simulation techniques to investigate the behaviour of tooling under high-speed cutting conditions.

Teaching

Steve has been awarded a Senate Award for Excellence in Learning and Teaching as a member of the Design, Manufacturing and Management Teaching Group in the category of 'Excellence in Collaboration'. He is module leader for the second year course Design of Engineering Structures and Components (MEC215) and D

Module leader:

MEC205 Design of Engineering Components
MEC209 Design of Structures, Machines and Systems

With others:

MEC114 Mechanical Engineering Techniques
MEC120 Design and Manufacturing Techniques
MEC121 Motorsports Fundamentals 1
MEC124 Sports Engineering Techniques
MEC307 Group Design Project
MEC161 Introduction to Aerospace Design
