Sheffield psychologist receives national acclaim

An academic from the University of Sheffield has received a prestigious national award, in recognition of his contributions to the field of psychology.

Professor Graham Turpin, Head of the University´s Department of Psychology, has been awarded the British Psychological Society Award for Distinguished Contributions to Professional Psychology.

This national award is announced annually and is presented to psychologists who have made an outstanding contribution to professional practice.

Professor Turpin´s work has focused on applying experimental psychology to the understanding and treatment of psychological disorders, and in particular looking at the basic process underlying attention and emotion. This has included working with people who have been exposed to trauma and looking at methods of preventing posttraumatic stress disorder.

In addition to his role as the Head of the Department of Psychology, Professor Turpin has worked closely with the Department of Health, sitting on a many advisory groups. He has also convened a national working party on training clinical psychologists within the NHS.

Most recently Professor Turpin has made a significant contribution to the national development of the Department of Health´s Improving Access to Psychological Therapies initiative, which is making a major contribution to improving the welfare of the public.

The Award will confer life membership of the Society and a commemorative certificate will be presented to Professor Turpin at the Annual Conference of the Society. He will also deliver a keynote speech at the Annual Conference, which will be held in April 2010.

Dr Carole Allan, Chair of the British Psychological Society´s Professional Practice Board said: "Professor Graham Turpin is a worthy winner of this year´s Award for Distinguished Contributions to Professional Psychology 2009. He is worthy of this recognition by the BPS as he unites the highest standards of Professional Practice by ensuring that skilled clinical practice is embedded within a robust evidence base with the aim of maximising the very best outcomes for clients."

Professor Turpin said: Graham Turpin said: "It was a great surprise and a privilege to learn about the award. I would just like to thank all those colleagues with whom I have worked over the years to promote professional psychology, especially in the NHS, and in particular Nigel Atter, Tim Cate, Roslyn Hope, Bernard Kat and Tony Lavender."
