Sheffield´s universities take to the ice for Winter Varsity

Students from Sheffield´s two universities will take part in a high energy ice-hockey match next week (Saturday 20 February 2010) as part of the Winter Varsity Challenge 2010. Members of the public are invited to Sheffield Arena to watch the afternoon of entertainment and see which university will be crowned the winner.

The match will see budding ice-hockey stars from the University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam University battle it out to win the title of Winter Varsity Champions 2010. For 364 days of the year the rival players play together on a single Sheffield Universities ice hockey team, the Sheffield Bears. For this match, that team will divide as the two universities compete against each other.

Spectators buying tickets for this match will also be given the chance to watch the Sheffield Steelers versus the Belfast Giants at 7.00pm later that day.

Doors open at 2pm. Tickets are priced £2 for the match and are available from the University of Sheffield Box Office (0114 222 8777) or the Sheffield Hallam Box Office (0114253 4122). They will also be available on the day at the Sheffield Arena box office.

Now in its sixth year, Winter Varsity is a unique event, with few universities offering anything similar.

Kate Rickard, Sports Officer at the University Of Sheffield's Union of Students, said: "Winter Varsity is set to be another great event on Sheffield´s sporting calendar. The competition between the two universities is always fierce, which provides a great atmosphere for spectators. The University of Sheffield is hoping to retain the title for the sixth year running, and we hope members of the public will pick a team to support, and come down to take part in this not-to-be-missed event."

Samantha Gill, Sports Officer for Hallam Union, said: "Winter Varsity 2010 is gearing up to be bigger and better than previous years. The competition is a celebration of sport and the excellent facilities Sheffield has to offer and we welcome everyone who wants to come and support either team. The Sheffield Hallam students are getting ready to give it their all in what promises to be a nail biting competition."

Notes for Editors: Winter Varsity precedes the main Varsity Challenge between the two universities which runs from Wednesday 14 April to Wednesday 21 April 2010.
