Students present their grand designs on the Moor
Visitors to the Moor in Sheffield this weekend (27-28 February 2010) were treated to a unique display of distinctive installations showcasing the design work of students from the University of Sheffield´s School of Architecture.
Nine groups of architecture and structural engineering students exhibited their public installation or structure on the Moor as part of the `Matter-Reality´ project. The project aims to create structures which inspire and instigate conversation and interact with the public in Sheffield´s town centre.
The students were asked to design a place for conversation, which could take the form of a seat, a place to rest, a place of shelter or an interactive installation. The different groups each chose a different material to work with from metals and glass, to bio-materials and polymers.
The project, which involves students in their first year of study, aims to help them develop research skills, explore the relationship between materials and construction and understand the importance of material properties and how they inform design.
Sita Jobanputra, an architecture student who took part in the project, said: "This is our first project where we've been able to fully integrate ourselves with the residents of Sheffield and that's why it's so great that the event took place down at the Moor. There is a pretty pertinent connection between our approach to using various materials to create new spaces and the regeneration of the Moor. The project has taught us a great deal and has been the most hands-on project by far. We've been doing things from drilling holes in limestone to attempting to lay brick walls and hopefully these practical experiences will give us a good basis of understanding when it comes to construction in the future."
