Students teach origami skills to care home residents
Residents of the Tapton Edge Care Home in Broomhill were treated to an origami taster session this week (Wednesday 3 March 2010), as part of an ongoing volunteering project run by students at the University of Sheffield.
Six students took part in the session, which aimed to teach the residents the basic skills of origami. By the end of the session, the residents had learnt how to make jumping frogs and swans. The ongoing project involves weekly visits by a total of 17 student volunteers to the care home to provide stimulation for the residents and the opportunity to learn new skills together.
The project, which is now in its 17th year, provides the chance for the two generations to meet and interact together, particularly as the students have often moved away from their own family to come to university. The programme of activities has previously included themed quizzes, flower arranging, prize bingo, cards and dominoes.
Naseeb Saqlain, Student Volunteer Project Leader, said: "The residents really embraced the origami and had great fun doing it. We try and produce new activities each week to make the sessions varied and enjoyable."
Pat Bond, Deputy Manager of Tapton Edge, said: "Residents always look forward to Wednesday afternoons, the students are great with them. We would never have thought of doing activities like origami, the interaction with the students is very beneficial and it's great exercise for their fingers too!"
