Comedy festival brings gags galore to University
Comedy stars of the future are set to have audiences rolling in the aisles at the University of Sheffield this month, as part of the 2010 Sheffield Student Comedy Festival.
The event, which will be hosted by the University´s own award-winning improvised comedy troupe, The Shrimps, will run from 12-14 March 2010, and will conclude with the Sheffield heat of the Chortle Student Comedian of the Year on the Sunday.
The festival, which is the biggest gathering of its kind in the UK and has been funded by The Shrimps, aims to put Sheffield on the map as a centre of student comedy and inspire future student comedic talent. All the proceeds from the event will be donated to South Yorkshire Eating Disorder Association (SYEDA), a charity offering advice, support and counselling for those suffering from eating disorders and Sheffield Nightline, a student run telephone listening service which offers advice and counselling for the students of the University of Sheffield.
Amongst the rip-roaring line-up will be Wittank, a 5* group originally from the University of Durham who have appeared at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Le Navet Bete, a physical comedy clowning group and the critically acclaimed Bristol Revunions.
A host of workshops will also run throughout the festival, covering topics such as stand-up, magic and mind reading, short and long-form improvisation and musical comedy, all with the aim of helping people learn how to survive and succeed in the live comedy industry.
Rhe Underwood, a second year English Literature and History student from the University of Sheffield and one of the organisers of the festival, said: "It´s great to get the best of student comedy all together in one place and mark Sheffield as a University known for comedy. We´ve had high profile messages of support from the likes of Stephen Fry and Eddie Izzard, so we are keen to make the comedy festival bigger and better to place Sheffield on the comedy map and get the Shrimps name known, as well as raise awareness of two great charities."
Weekend tickets are priced at £10 and single day tickets are £6, both of which are now on sale at the Union Box Office by calling 0114 222 8777 or emailing boxoffice@sheffield.ac.uk
